When the largest coal fired power station in Europe was experiencing regular sub-basement flooding, it called on ITT Water & Wastewater, the leading total solutions provider for the transportation and treatment of water and wastewater, to offer an effective answer.
|
Drax Power Station, in Selby, North Yorkshire, produces almost 10% of the UK’s power and one of its six generators can power a city the size of Leeds. The power station has enjoyed a strong relationship with ITT Water & Wastewater for over eight years. During this time, a permanent maintenance team from ITT Water & Wastewater has been available on-site to provide Drax employees with comprehensive maintenance and technical solutions – playing an important role in the effective and efficient operation of the station.
To eradicate the hazard caused by the flooding and create a safe working environment, ITT Water & Wastewater designed and specified a solution that consisted of the new Flygt Ni-Hard 4 hard metal HS8043.181 range - capable of not only clearing water, but also the wash down debris with large solids which had been blocking the original pumps. In addition, because of the increasing difficulty in obtaining critical spares for the existing control panels, it was deemed necessary to replace these control panels. In order to provide a fast and efficient installation, ITT Water & Wastewater provided a dedicated team to install the equipment; as well as the permanent site engineers, to ensure there was no interference with day to day operational duties.

Modern control panels in association with ultra sonic level control provide optimum system control and reduced cost of ownership |
ITT Water & Wastewater, has installed thirteen of its Flygt HS8043.181 7.5kw pumps and new control panels with ultra sonic level controls. The new Flygt pumps are a vortex hydraulic design which minimises the risk of blocking with debris – solving the previous problem of blockages. The new ultra sonic level controls on the new control panels allowed the engineers to finely tune the level settings to keep the drains flowing - preventing any build up of water on the floor. |

The freestanding Flygt H8000 Series in Ni-Hard 4 materials of construction will handle almost all abrasive slurry applications and solids up to Ø 100mm |
