During 1992, the water companies were finding it increasingly difficult to provide the service demanded by consumers whilst endeavouring to reduce overheads to ensure happy shareholders. In addition, the EEC had brought in new legislation to improve environmental standards. With this in mind, Wessex Water approached ITT Flygt to help solve the problems of excessive maintenance costs.
In an attempt to control these maintenance costs, Wessex Water was in the throes of taking back the responsibility of the pumping stations which had been managed for years by all of the local authorities.
After initial discussions with Wessex Water, Flygt were commissioned to survey approximately 150 pumping stations. This figure eventually reached 600.
|

With the results of the surveys, Flygt was able to offer fixed costs to Wessex Water to implement repairs to elevate the pumping stations to an agreed standard. These were accepted and the work quickly completed. Wessex Water requested tenders for pumping station maintenance to cover the stations now within it’s control. Flygt was awarded the contract over several of our competitors.
The contract started with 890 pumping stations on a Flygt Gold Service Contract and has now ben extended to some 1200 pumping stations throughout the Wessex water area. The pumping stations had varying types of pumping equipment, from Mono positive displacement units to Lee Howell dry well lineshaft pumps, including submersibles manufactured by Flygt, ABS, Sarlin, Emu, Biwater and many others - all located in the six counties of Dorset, Hampshire, Avon, Wiltshire, Somerset and Gloucestershire.
Flygt covered the contract with dedicated engineers who work from three strategically placed Service Centres based at Highbridge, Somerset and Horndean and Poole in Hampshire.
As a result of the Flygt maintenance contract, Wessex Water has made some dramatic savings by reduced maintenance costs and greatly reduced repair costs, accompanied by huge savings from reduced blockages and Wessex Water staff overtime payments.
